10 days movie challenge – Day 6

Lilo and Stitch.
My choice for Day 6.

I love Disney movie, because it was something that you cannot get away with.
Disney animation has been around for a very long time, to the point where it is older than my parents.
Even my parents watched Mickey and Minnie and Disney animation.

Before Lilo and Stitch, Lion King was my favourite.
Before Lion King, Beauty and the Beast was my favourite.

I also love watching Tangled, but I still prefer Lilo and Stitch.
I think it might to be to do with the fact it was low budget (a little like Dumbo, which is also an amazing Disney movie).
I also think Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Hercules are both totally underrated.
The music is amazing for Pocahontas, but the story was terrible.

But when it comes to Lilo and Stitch, who doesn’t a six legged alien with no self-control, being taught by a six-year-old who loves Elvis?
And it’s set in Hawaii – Everybody is happy in Hawaii, and the movie is happy. Even the aliens are friendly.
They all had a job to do, and they did not intentionally ant to harm the others.

There’s no spoilers on this one.
I don’t think.

But I am going to be a “Read More” anyway, just in case.

What songs define the 80s?

I was born in the mid-80s.
I made a list of songs that I think define the 80s and I think so far, 80s have the best music.
I am not kidding.
It’s the era of Elton John and his “I’m still standing”, Michael Jackson and his Thriller and Beat It.
Wham and their Careless Whispers and Wake me up before you Go-go.
Songs like Sweet Dreams are made of this, It’s Raining Men and Conga.
Ghostbusters and Footloose.
When Disney starts to come up and touch your heart with “Somewhere Out There” from the American Tail.

Problem is, half of the songs that I heard were covers from the 80s and I didn’t know until I heard the original.
The first time I heard ‘The Tide is High’ was because Take 5 covered it (Remember Take 5? They were like… the litter version of the Backstreet Boys/*NSYNC).
It’s similar to Stand by me – I heard that in Cantonese first, in the 90s, sang by Anita Mui, who is like… the Chinese version of Madonna.
And Uptown girl, I also heard the Cantonese version first.
I knew ‘I love Rock’n Roll’ is a cover, but I didn’t know it was the 80s (I thought it was later than that).
Also, Aaron Carter did a version of The Clapping Song and I thought that was WAY before the 80s.

Obviously there were originals that I’ve heard, like All Out Of Love and The Rose and songs by Journey (before Glee made them popular), like Open Arms and Don’t Stop Believing.
And MJ (I didn’t know ‘She’s Out Of My Life’ is by Michael Jackson until later, I thought 98 Degrees just got MJ to write them a song – I was that bad) and Madonna.
I knew ‘Video Kill the Radio Star” from somewhere (no idea where though), and I knew that was the 80s, mainly because MTV turned up and radio are dying because people are watching MTV.

And of course Glee.
I heard so many songs from the 80s in Glee.
When Blaine and Cooper did a mash-up of Hungry Like A Wolf And Rio.

Most of the original though, I didn’t hear it until I was old enough to go to school discos (given I was in a boarding school) and of course, when I was in universities and sought out some serious 80s club…
I did a duet with someone in university in a Karaoke bar.
Funny enough the person I did a duet with was the one who sought me, because he has been wanting someone to do “Endless Love” with him, but no one could sing well enough. He heard me by accident – and he asked if I’d do the duet with him.
I knew who Lionel Richie is, I knew who Diane Warren is and I knew Endless Love.
However, I don’t know-know Endless love.
And having to learn the part was a wee bit more difficult than I thought, especially I didn’t have the music.
“Eternal Flame” is another one that I sang. I like the song enough when I first heard it, but I never realise it is the right range for my voice until a singing teacher pointed it out to me.
I still don’t really like the song, but hey – at least if I needed a ballad to sooth a room full of people, I know that’s the song to go to.

Personally, I think the most iconic song of the 80s is probably Livin’ on a Prayer.
There’s of course, songs like “Summer of ’69” (which was not a song from the 70s) an Raspberry Beret which totally rocks, and ballads like Greatest Love Of All, Against All Odds and The Power of Love, and really soppy songs like Right Here Waiting and Nothing’s Gonna Change my Love For you.
But Livin’ On A Prayer is still being sung and played like there is no tomorrow, at weddings and discos and everything.
I don’t think there is anybody who doesn’t know the words to the song either.

First day back at work (page 4 of 366)

It’s so lovely to be back in the office.
Because I didn’t realise how much I miss the people that I work with.
I have 189 emails to get through this morning, admittedly most of them has already been dealt with so it wasn’t too much, but there are a lot of other stuff that people assumed since I am back in the office on 4th January, I’ll be able to meeting the deadline of end of business day on 4th January.

And of course the usual suspects are the ones that is creating problems and I am glad that I wouldn’t be seeing them after this two weeks.
Which is still weird to say.

What I haven’t mentioned is that curly and I went to see Disney On Ice on 2nd January, when I was busy answer more questions. This one has Frozen.
In fact, the whole selling point of this one is Frozen.
It’s very different from the one that we went to.
The last one has chunks of all the well-known movies, whereas this one focused on 4:
1) Toy story 3 (yes – very specific)
2) The Little Mermaid
3) Cars (I still haven’t watched it and have no idea what the story is)
4) Frozen

To be fair, Curly and I mainly wanted to go and see Disney on Ice because of Frozen.
And we did.
We aren’t as impressed as we thought we would be, but we had fun.
We also pick up tickets to go and see yet another Broadway show too, in February; so I am very very excited.
Can’t wait.

Oh what a night

Yesterday was JB’s little sister’s birthday.
She wanted a Disney princess birthday party.

And that was what she got.

Unfortunately she didn’t get her Elsa dress, but on the other hand she got the Anna dress.
She even dyed her hair ginger except for a strand and kept it blond (she is a blonde).

I on the other hand was told not to dress up as Mulan or Pocahontas.
So I dressed up as Rapunzel after she had the hair cut off, when she was a brunette with short hair.
Admittedly my hair is currently purple with blue streaks, but I think it looked fine.

The best thing that happened was the boys dressed up as princesses as well.
JB was going to go as Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) but he decided he couldn’t get away with so much pain, and that he would clash with me so he ended up dressing as Merida.
He got the bright red curly wig as well.
The next one dressed up as Cinderella, and went full on with a bloody baby blue gown (from a charity shop actually), and at the end of the night he lost a shoe.
The Manchild dressed up as Ariel.
Only he said he couldn’t possibly rock the purple shells and the tail so he went for the ‘wrap dress’ when she first gotten her legs.
I was will impressed.

On the other hand, the Manchild’s girlfriend (yes – he has a girlfriend and one of the most adorable girl that I have ever met and she is so so sweet), who has dark brunette hair, she had it cut and she went for Snow White.
She actually needed a haircut and she wanted to change the hairstyle, so she had it cut into a bob.
JB’s little sister cut her hair.

And then she cut mine this morning.

We had a few weird encounters with people of course – those who weren’t comfortable of their sexuality and start picking on the boys.
Men who had a few drinks said ‘you’re getting it up your ass tonight’, ‘what a bunch of fags’ and ‘ALRIGHT PRINCESS’ (That wasn’t directed as JB’s sister, me or Manchild’s girlfriend) were things we heard the most last night.
It was ridiculous.

And today is Brighton Pride.
I was a bit upset that I didn’t make it, but I told one of my friends from primary school to go.
She’s pro-LGBTQIA like I am.
She loved it.

I just wanted to say ‘being gay is not a choice, but being an homophobic asshole is’.

Define “fan”

Today I encountered two very interesting verbal discussion.

First it was with a colleague, who is rather boisterous but is very lovable as a person.
Well technically he didn’t start the who discussion.
Mr. I-can-do-so-much-better-than-you did.
The definition and meaning of each other’s name came up.
So this colleague, his name means “Lofty” and “high mountain”. In Egyptian even means “worrier lion”.
He also said he’s a very important character in the bible because even though he didn’t physically saved the Jews, his words helped saving the Jews.
So I jokingly said “dude I am named after an archangel. There’s two named archangel in the bible and I was one of them… And your parents were lazy and went for the first baby boy name in the book”.
He laughed.

At lunch time, another colleague (from another department) said she’s s big Disney fan. I said I am too, and I love love Disney movies.
And we went on discussed more Disney movies when she said “did you know Beauty and the Beast is the last Disney 2D movie?”
I stopped her right there.
What happened to Lilo and Stitch?
She said she’s never seen Lilo and Stitch.
Okay.
That’s fine with me.
But what about Mulan? Pocahontas? Hercules?
All of the above came out after Beauty and the Beast and they are both in 2D.
I hate it when people don’t get their facts right.
So I stopped talking.
I don’t like people falsely claimed they see a “fan” of something snd doesn’t get all the facts right.

The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they crease to love.
W. Somerset Maugham

I feel sorry for people who can’t love.
Who don’t want to love.

Tiger at large

I don’t know if you have seen the news this afternoon.
Apparently a tiger was running around Paris and was close to Disneyland round about mid afternoon.

tight not Tigger!!!

I received lots of messages from people who knows me well the moment they saw them online.

IMG_0617.JPG
Because apparently I am capable of doing that.

I am proud that people have so much faith in me.

You are my only love. You have me completely in your power.
James Joyce

I don’t know James Joyce very well. I think he is one of those authors that I never really thought about reading.
But I think I agree with him on that one.
When you’re in love with someone you’re practically in their mercy.
It’s weird.

Disney on ice

Keep love in your heart… The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness I life that nothing else can bring.
Oscar Wilde

I am always in love.
I love the feeling of giving love, as much as I love being loved.
Feeling loved is part of me.
I’d die without it.
Like I’d die without music.

Counting I didn’t get to sleep until after midnight at Curly’s last night (we are good at NOT going to sleep – a type of procrastination…?), we didn’t get up until late today.
Then we fluff as per usual and went straight into lunch.
We planned to have pancakes for breakfast.
That didn’t happen.

Incident number 1: shoe polish on Curly’s trousers.

Luckily that was easy to clean off.

Anyways, then we went into the shopping centre, to pick all the stuff that she needs:
1) make up
2) tinsel
3) advent calendar (colouring)

I got a Marvel superheroes mug.
Huzzah.

Incident 2: Curly broke her nail – we don’t know how and we don’t know when.

After that we went to the arena to pick up the tickets for Disney On Ice.

Incident 3: I fell out of the door in the car after it was parked. I needed to be rescued so Curly went all the way round and then helped me up.

After we got the tickets, we went to have dinner.

Incident 4: I got pesto all over my white fleece-y hoodie. Oops.

Then into Disney on ice.
It was amazing.we were encouraged to Sing-along.
It was so good.
Beauty and the Beast made me cry.

Incident 5: Curly nearly dropped the whole cup of sprite.

We got home at half past nine and we coloured in the advent calendar and we’re only going to bed now.

Epic day.
I love spending time with my best friend.
